1889, George Bauer. 102 Bauer Ave. (northwest corner of N. Main St.)
  • (Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division)

George Bauer opened the first store and first bank in Montezuma County. He built this two-and-one-half-story house of soft red brick with smooth sandstone quoins and flattened-arch windows. Between 1919 and 1952, when it served as a hospital, alterations were made to this Italianate residence, now a bed and breakfast inn.
