This dramatic row of warehouses, erected for local industrialist and plantation owner John Stoddard, breaks up its long mass with arched end wings and a central gabled section. The rhythmic pattern of round arches and simple brick cornice are reminiscent of Rundbogenstil. A plaque on the north elevation stating “John D. Mongin’s Wharf, 1824” (evidently from an earlier building) honors Stoddard’s wife’s grandfather, who erected earlier warehouses on this site. The row sustained fire damage in 1876. Inside the Vic’s on the River restaurant at 26 E. Bay is a wall mural depicting a map of Sherman’s March to the Sea, drawn by Union soldiers billeted in the building and uncovered in 1901.
