Savannah Children’s Museum (Carpentry Shop, Central of Georgia Railroad)

1853; 1923 rebuilt; 2008–2012 renovated, Coastal Heritage Society Design Group. Beyond the Boiler Room (7.1.8)

The 1853 carpentry shop was destroyed by fire, rebuilt in 1923, and burned again in 1984. Today only brick walls and basement-level transverse vaults survive but they suggest that the line shaft system continued through this building at basement level to power machinery from below. The basement level now incorporates a playground as part of the Savannah Children’s Museum, which opened in 2012.
