Beyond the repair shops, the areas east (Railroad Ward) and south comprised numerous blocks of modest housing—mostly single-story, clapboard cottages—used by railroad workers. Of the more than three hundred houses standing in the early twentieth century, only four examples survive, at Charlton and Purse streets. This pair remains on its original site and is privately owned. The two other worker cottages, at 539 W. Charlton (moved from across the street) and at 342 Purse Street, are preserved by the Coastal Heritage Society.
