In response to Hurricane Katrina’s destruction of housing on Point Cadet, Mississippi State University’s College of Architecture, Art, and Design established the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio. Under director David Perkes, the studio has provided design services for some 250 new houses and 60 rehabilitations. Because of residents’ preferences, most of the houses are traditional, local types. However, this unornamented wooden house featured in Architectural Record in October 2008 has a nontraditional butterfly roof that diverts water to a cistern. Elevated to meet post-Katrina building codes, it has simple geometric massing and a deep porch.
