CHESTER AND FLORENCE UNDERWOOD HOUSE

Although Overstreet referred to this two-story house as “ultra-modern,” its design combines modernism with Beaux-Arts planning principles, in its classical three-part symmetry, an almost whimsical dentil cornice on the planar walls, a curved entrance portal, and glass block. The original scheme called for poured concrete, but the house is of concrete block rendered with stucco. Inside, family living spaces open to the rear garden, and a garage was integrated into the one-story west wing. Vice-president of the Knox Glass Bottle Company, Chester R. Underwood also served as president of Air Conditioning Inc.
