S. H. KRESS STORE BUILDING

1931–1932, Edward F. Sibbert. 500 Main St.

This blond brick and terra-cotta Moderne three-story building was designed late in Sibbert’s tenure as the head of Kress’s design division. Established in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, in 1887 by Samuel H. Kress, the five-and-dime department store chain spread across the country in the early twentieth century, and the company became known for its grand Moderne and Art Deco buildings.

Opposite at 501 Main, the six-story Carter Building (1907, R. H. Hunt), now apartments, displays a Chicago School tall-building tripartite organization.
