De Weldon, the sculptor of the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, provided his usual spirited composition for The Angel of Marye's Heights, commemorating Sergeant Richard Kirkland of the 2nd South Carolina Volunteers, who carried water and nursed wounded Union troops.
