Sited prominently with a superb view to the south (and now to I-66), this large, pedimented Greek Revival dwelling with a white-painted stucco exterior recalls the single-story raisedbasement houses of the deep South, such as those in Alabama, rather than Virginia houses. Local tradition holds that its original owner, Margaret Marshall, granddaughter of Chief Justice John Marshall, designed it after a trip through the deep South.
