Built to replace a mess hall that had become too small, the new mess hall is cross-shaped in plan, with a large, two-story section. The first floor contained the dining room, kitchen, bakery, butcher shop, and meat room, while the second floor had residential space. On the front a recessed porch sheltered entrances to the first floor and the stairway, while the second-floor loggia gave access to two apartments.
