Graham Gund used existing garden walls and a nineteenth-century carriage house as the foundation for this distinctive residence. He converted one bay of the carriage house to a music room and extended a one-story piano practice room and master bedroom beyond for his clients, both professional musicians. The architect's second-story addition creates an unusual corner within the neighborhood's red brick ambiance. Here rise gable-crowned stucco walls into which square windows are set in a projecting trellis to create an air of garden pavilion or gate house, as do the diamond and circular windows beneath the hip-slate roof. A two-story living room gives a sense of more ample space, rising as it does to a skylit loft.
