Commercial Buildings

-A A +A
1906–1927. 62-595 to 66-087 Kamehameha Hwy.

Approximately two dozen structures from the opening decades of the twentieth century remain in Haleiwa. The commercial buildings embrace a diversity of one-and two-story forms, and are primarily vernacular in character and of single-wall construction. The Tanaka Store at 66-087 Kamehameha Highway, which now houses Matsumoto Shave Ice, is one of the oldest buildings in town, dating from 1906. The two stepped-gabled M. Yoshida stores built in 1923 at numbers 66-075 and 66-079 stand out from their wood-framed neighbors through their use of lava rock. At the far end of town at number 66-030, Bishop Bank (c. 1927) is a charming Mediterranean Revival building with its clay-tile hipped-roof sheltering the reinforced-concrete walls. Steel casement windows with mock balconies flank the centered French-door entrance. The Surf 'n' Sea (c. 1930) at number 62-595 is one of the taller buildings in town, rising two-and-a-half stories and featuring a bracketed cornice and ventilating oculi. Shingle siding provides additional protection on the weather sides of this single-wall, tongue-and-groove building.
