Traer Winding Stairs

-A A +A
1894. 534 2nd St. (north side of 2nd St., west of US 63)

Projecting from the second floor of the Star Clipper Building is an iron bridge that extends out over the sidewalk; near the street the bridge is connected to an iron spiral staircase. The lightness of the iron members of the bridge and the stairs makes them almost disappear within the downtown landscape. The stairs were provided so that one could go directly to the newspaper office on the second floor. Nearby, at 423 Second Street, is the Brooks and Moore building, an Italianate business block. This 1873 building displays an exuberantly detailed entablature and cornice, and windows with projecting keystones and hoods.
