Plymouth County Courthouse

The Austin, Minnesota, firm of Kinney and Detweiler also designed the similar Clay County Courthouse (1900–1901) at Spencer ( NO273, p. 433). Both are Beaux-Arts designs, with a projecting pavilion or portico repeated on each of the four facades. The Plymouth County Courthouse is raised almost a full floor above the ground, thus providing a high, grand stairway leading up to its principal entrance with Corinthian columns. The building is sheathed in Portageentry red sandstone, which provides a warm salmon-rose color. The building is now regrettably devoid of its high central tower and dome, which were removed in 1932.
