  • Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church (David Gebhard and Gerald Mansheim)

This Gothic Revival church with a central tower and spire has all the appearance of a late nineteenth-century cast-iron toy church that has been magically enlarged, but its enlargement is insufficient to take it completely out of fairyland and into the real world. The interior is plain, except for lush reredos and two elaborately carved golden oak confessionals. The accompanying two-story school on a raised basement is Renaissance in image, and in contrast to the church, it suggests stern reality and harsh seriousness.
