1869. Drive north of Decorah on US 52, then northwest 8 miles on route W20 (Pole Line Rd.); take first gravel road to the right (east); cross Upper Iowa River; 300 yards beyond bridge turn right (south) on gravel road, then take first lane to right

The persistent traveler is rewarded with a view of this substantial two-story brick dwelling; in style it is Italianate. The house was built by Elizabeth and Henry Harcourt Horn, members of an English colony that sought to establish itself in the countryside around Decorah. The situation of the house within the landscape, its more formal qualities, and its details suggest a country house rather than a farmhouse.
