Richmond Reservoir

The cascading fountain backdrop behind the Columbus Memorial serves to conceal part of the pumping equipment for the reservoir. Remarkably, this containment of 40 million gallons of water has provided almost 125 years of service to the city of Richmond. In the 1960s a roof was constructed over the entire reservoir. On the opposite side of the reservoir, at 2700 Stafford Road, is a pumping station (c. 1920) that doubles as a classically detailed garden casino with arched openings, quoins, and cornice. Trefoil medallions decorate the facade, suggesting the turbines at the heart of the facility.
