A lively exterior stairway encompassed within a stone balustrade terminating in inverted consoles leads up to an academically correct portico on a raised basement, with arches below and Ionic columns above. An unusual aspect of the design is the row of overscaled vent grilles in the attic story. Within the building are murals of the 1930s by Herman O. Myre. Their subject is the early history of Iowa.
