Stephens-Carpenter House (now Museum of the Lucas County Historical Society)

A. J. Stephens, who built this house for his own family, was a successful building contractor in Chariton. The principal front of this Colonial Revival house presents the classic, often repeated scheme of cross porches; there is a two-story porch with columns, and a single-floor porch running parallel to the building and underneath the high porch. The fenestration of the long sides of the house and its rear seems to have been based on utilitarian considerations, not style. The walls of the house are of ashlar block masonry, and their solidity contrasts with the lightness of the wood bays, porches, and other features. Next door to the house is a schoolhouse (1889) that was moved to the site.
