Allen House

-A A +A
1858, John J. McNutt; 2000, Domenech and Hicks. 1682 Washington St. at Worcester Sq.
  • Allen House (Peter Vanderwarker or Antonina Smith)

This exuberant brownstone mix of French Second Empire and Italianate details was home to Aaron Hall Allen, furniture dealer and real estate developer. Architect McNutt was best known as a woodworker whose office and extensive workshop (SE11) were located on nearby Wareham Street. McNutt also created theater sets, which perhaps explains the dramatic quality of the Allen House. Notice the fabulous brownstone details such as the richly carved cornice. Originally, Allen's coat of arms adorned the oriel windows on the principal facades. Although abandoned in 1953, the building has recently been restored as condominiums through city support and community action.
