Harbor Towers

These two 40-story towers rise on the site of the India Wharf warehouses, built in 1807 by Charles Bulfinch, the last section of which was demolished in the early 1960s. A new scale was established on the Boston skyline in these gridded concrete high-rise structures built in pinwheel fashion around a central core. Curved piers and recessed spandrels create a lively, yet dignified surface. Balconies add to the sculptural rhythm, but their usage is minimal. At the base of the towers stands David von Schlegell's India Wharf Project (1972), two stainless steel planes set at an abstruse angle.
