St. Charles Refractories Company–KMS Refractories (McLain Fire Brick Company)
c. 1900. 24 St. Charles Rd. (TWP 466), 7.5 miles southwest of New Bethlehem
This manufacturing plant consists of nine yellow brick kilns, chimneys, and a series of sheds and two-story, flat-roofed buildings sited along Redbank Creek, the southern border of Clarion County. Located in an isolated spot, the adjacent remnants of workers' housing west of the plant indicate that once this was the village of St. Charles. Refractory bricks, as made here, are used to line furnaces in steel mills and absorb heat in other manufacturing operations.
