Oakwood Manor (Luke B. Carter Farm)

-A A +A
Luke B. Carter Farm
1930, Prentice Sanger. PA 8, 1 mile northwest of Titusville

This manor is a fine example of the kind of sophisticated architecture prevalent in the Titusville area well into the 1930s. The brick Neo-Georgian house in five parts, with its four tall chimneys and verdant site, was designed by New York City architect Prentice Sanger for the Carter family as the centerpiece of their farm. The family's money came from the oil industry, but the succeeding generations chose to breed cattle. In the 1950s, an engineer for the Talon zipper factory carved the large house into apartments, and the cattle barns and grounds around it became an industrial park.
