Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ “Old Rite”

Perched on a site overlooking Presque Isle Bay and the library complex, this tan brick church builds in a series of rectangular-shaped volumes to a central polygonal drum supporting a large gilded onion dome. The entrance is marked by a lower tower, which is embellished on the front with a mosaic panel depicting the Madonna and Child, and is topped by a small gilded onion dome. The neighborhood was built by Russian dockworkers and their families who began arriving in Erie in the 1870s. This modern church replaced an earlier version built to serve the Orthodox congregation, but its interior retains the tradition of icon-covered walls.
