This simple, gable-roofed two-story farmhouse with a two-story wing to the east and a porch sheltering the entrance could be a farm anywhere in western Pennsylvania but for the fact that there are no electrical wires leading to it. Old Order Amish farmhouses are simple inside and out: no decorative moldings or carpeting, and plain cotton curtains on string nailed to the window frame. The house, with a narrow central brick chimney, is heated by a stove. All of the buildings are handcrafted. Because traditional styling is consistently used and the buildings are well maintained, it is difficult to properly date them visually. To see a series of Amish farms, turn west from PA 18 onto Heather Heights Road, but be careful not to photograph any Amish people; it offends their religious beliefs.
