William Price's massive stone fortification would appear to conflict with his Quaker beliefs as evidenced seven years later, when he wrote a tract, “Peace Man or War Man,” advocating William Penn's pacifist position even as Western Europe descended into war. Perhaps the project was rendered palatable by the opportunity to design a play castle with battlements along the parapet that screens the economical steel trusses that span the great hall. If swords can be beaten into plowshares, why should it now be a surprise to see an armory turned into a Trader Joe's?
