The congregation was formed in 1858 and thirty years later commissioned this landmark church. Its rough-textured walls and massive tower surmounted by a stone spire of local Conshohocken stone are a superb example of Burns's free Victorian Gothic while denoting the competition among denominations that highlight post–Civil War urbanism. Like St. David's Episcopal Church (St. David's and DuPont streets) in nearby Manayunk, the church's location and scale, towering over the community, are evidence of the cultural dominance of the Episcopal mill owners over the workers’ houses and their institutions.
