Feodor Pitcairn House

-A A +A
1959, Richard Neutra. 2860 Papermill Rd. at Cathedral Rd.

Despite their love of medieval architecture, later members of the Pitcairn family were also important patrons of modern architecture. Feodor Pitcairn's house by West Coast modernist Richard Neutra is dominated by a flat roof and great sheets of plate glass opening on to its green glade. These elements contrast with the historical style, but not the feeling of the earlier buildings. Across nearby Huntington Pike is the Academy of the New Church, whose campus was designed by Mitchell/Giurgola Architects in 1959–1961. They continued as campus architects, designing the men's dormitory in 1961–1963 as well as the administration building in 1960–1964.
