Houston Development Houses

1880s, G. W. and W. D. Hewitt. 8000 block of St. Martin's Ln.

North and south along St. Martin's Lane are numerous houses of the local schist by the Hewitts including numbers 8020, 8030, and 8040, each dating from 1888, showing handsome juxtapositions of shingle bays and stone walls. Smaller twins by the Hewitts along the 8300 block of Shawnee Avenue between the train line and Germantown Avenue establish the hierarchy of the village. The middle classes needed access to the shops of Germantown Avenue and the railroad stations while the carriage trade built beyond the train lines.
