Once, ethnically based volunteer companies provided both fire protection and camaraderie to America's urban immigrant neighborhoods. They are still found in the towns of the anthracite region; some, like the historically Irish Phoenix Fire Company, built elaborate Beaux-Arts edifices to house members and apparatus. The Polish American Fire Company (1921) is located one block away.
