Next door to the courthouse, the brick State House held the county offices and jury rooms. Designed in the manner of contiguous three-bay Federal houses, it has two entrances with gabled door hoods. Since 1860, it has been a private residence. The jail across the street at 427–429 Market Street, designed by local builder Frederick Hipple in 1816, housed the sheriff and his family above ground and the prisoners in the basement.
