The only remaining element of the 1661 plan of the island is the Island Cemetery, located at the southern edge of what was planned as the compact part of the settlement. Like land divisions in several other Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth Colony proprietary settlements, the plan's arbitrary geometry was little related to local topography and was probably modified or abandoned soon after settlement. Few early stones survive; most are from the late nineteenth century.
