Triple-Deckers

-A A +A
c. 1900. Winter St.

On Winter Street, facing into the project, are remarkable triple-decker flats, much knocked about, with a fourth story at street level which once housed stores. One, at number 19, with a heavy cornice over three tiers of porch which front apartments, above a store with a cast iron front, is exceptionally monumental. In Manville, of all the Lincoln/Cumberland mill villages, provision of worker housing depended on private enterprise rather than on the paternalism of mill owners. These triple-deckers are conspicuous examples of privately built housing face to face with the company housing across the street.

Other housing in the area includes a beautifully preserved one-and-one-half-story Greek Revival duplex workers' house with transomed doors at either end and four pedimented dormers (c. 1840), at 2–4 Cottage Street.
