This imposing stuccoed brick Italianate house, designed by the architect of the City Market (DW15) for merchant Robert Dunn McIlwaine and his wife, Lucy, is the dominant presence on the street. The house is one of Black's first local commissions. It has double windows below segmental- and round-arched moldings, a bracketed cornice, a large centered pendant on the front porch, and iron balconies and railings. During the Civil War, McIlwaine served as a captain in the Confederate army and the house was the headquarters of Confederate major general George E. Pickett from 1863 to 1864.
