More impressive than elegant, this unusually large Federal house shows itself off at the end of Narragansett Way. Two important military leaders resided here: a Revolutionary War general and Admiral Matthew Perry's second in command on his voyage to “open” Japan. The typical five-bay plan is far from symmetrical, while details are quite bald. The recessed entrance is part of an 1803 modification, and doubtless reflects municipal legislation toward the end of the eighteenth century banning the earlier projection of stairs and porches onto public sidewalks.
