This row of ten houses in the manner of model “new town” cottages in English industrial towns was to have been part of a planned community of fifty such houses erected by B. B. & R. Knight in connection with the 1919–1921 rebuilding of the Royal Mills. The Boston engineering firm of Lockwood, Greene laid out the site plan for the project, which was acclaimed at the time for its size and its progressive nature. Hard times in the textile industry, beginning at this time, forced early abandonment.
