West of Appleton, the Fox River Mall and Plaza is a typical retail center of the 1980s and 1990s. Its cruciform plan features major department stores that anchor five of the cross’s six nodes. Nearly 150 shops line the mall’s interior, each built by the individual retailer to conform to design criteria set by the mall’s owner, General Growth Properties. On the north side, the Northwoods Café serves as the mall’s entryway. In 1998, Anthony Belluschi Architects designed this addition with two tiers of glazed gables, crowned by a glazed belvedere, to evoke a Northwoods chalet. These ample windows flood the atrium with light, which creates an inviting public space that offers tempting views of the food court and a local brewpub.
