A proliferation of sharply gabled, projecting units, connected by recessed hyphens, defines this somewhat overly complex structure. Designed in house by NPS personnel, the headquarters is only moderately successful in its stated attempt to imitate the shapes and forms typical of the region's coal company towns. Various interior alterations have been necessary in order for the building to continue to serve its functions, and the wood siding has been replaced with artificial materials. Still, the silhouette and standing-seam metal roof manage to connote something of the area's historic architecture.
