Charles Town's main residential area occupies some twenty grid-pattern blocks in this quadrant. The gallows where John Brown was hanged in 1859 was here, when the area was largely open fields. Although older buildings are scattered about, the neighborhood developed primarily in the early twentieth century. Houses of various sizes and styles, generally set back from the streets in spacious, tree-shaded yards, characterize the neighborhood.
