Examples of small single-family and duplex houses built for the rapidly expanding population of workers employed in Radford's industrial complexes are concentrated in this area. Williamson, one of the Philadelphia architects working in Radford in the 1890s, designed several Queen Anne houses of one or one-and-a-half stories for a local developer. Employing gambrel roofs, shingled gambrel ends, and recessed porches, the small houses provided a relatively stylish alternative to the standard builders' product.
