Walnut Grove (Summers Log House)

Part log and part frame, this one-and-one-halfstory, five-bay house originally stood near Winfield in Putnam County. Side lights and a transom frame the front door in an unusual arrangement. The surprisingly spacious interior features exposed log construction in the stairwell. The two front rooms on the first floor have fireplaces, while those behind, in a leanto, shed-roofed rear addition, do not. The house was the first West Virginia home of the prominent Summers family (see Glenwood, Charleston). Unfortunately, the reconstruction is among the least accurate at the museum: Machine-cut brick chimneys with exposed flues, an asphalt shingle roof, and concrete sidewalks mar its authenticity.
