North Front Street Houses

-A A +A
Various dates

Several houses of architectural interest, oddly arranged because of the irregular street pattern here, cluster around the Brues House. Built on a triangular plot, the brick house at 203 North Front Street has a five-bay facade with an elaborate doorway and bracketed cornice. Behind it, at 205, 207, and 209 North Broadway, stand three charming, slightly younger “painted ladies.” These gable-ended Queen Anne houses have lots of architectural flair, including prominent Palladian windows in the gables.

North Front Street continues to the northern tip of Wheeling Island through several turnings, dictated by the shape of the island. Two of the most interesting houses along its meandering course are 326 North Front Street, a threebay, Wheeling Italianate house, and 410 North Front Street, a wood-frame Queen Anne cottage with more architectural detail than most houses twice its size usually display.
