House

-A A +A
c. 1960. North corner of the intersection of National Rd. and Howard Pl.

High above the street intersection, and high above a retaining wall built for an earlier structure on the property, this horizontal mass is Wheeling's (and most likely West Virginia's) closest approximation of a Frank Lloyd Wright house. Horizontal stone courses combine with metal overhangs and repetitive bands of windows to create a definite Wrightian effect. Above, gutter spouts extend theatrically far beyond the facade, while chimneys provide necessary vertical notes.
