Close to the Ohio River, this rugged log survivor endures, albeit precariously. It stands between the tracks of the B&O Railroad, laid in 1871, and the highway, dating from 1928. Engineers and workers on both were impressed by the “landmark quality” of the old building and spared it. Square-hewn poplar and oak logs were covered with clapboards at one time, but they were removed c. 1935. The Hanes House reminds passersby of early settlement in a section of the Ohio River valley that has subsequently seen a great deal of industrial activity.
