Named for colonial-era tavern keeper John Keys, Keysville developed after the Richmond and Danville (later Southern) Railroad arrived in November 1852. The town was incorporated in 1887, and continued to grow as a railroad junction, regional trading center, and something of a country resort through the early twentieth century.
