Manassa (1879, 7,683 feet) was founded by Mormon colonists and named for one of the sons of Joseph in the Old Testament. Hispanics at Los Cerritos, 3 miles southeast, supposedly tried to stop the colony by damming the north fork of the Conejos River, but the Mormons cleared the river and built a successful agricultural town.
