South Fork (1876, 8,190 feet) was built around a large lumber mill that still sustains the hamlet. An old general store and an abandoned D&RG water tank survive from the glory days of narrow-gauge steam railroading. Here U.S. 160 intersects the scenic Silver Thread Byway (Colorado 149), which leads to Wagon Wheel Gap and the mining town of Creede in Mineral County.
