St. Mary of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church

St. Mary's is a streamlined version of Spanish Mediterranean. With its white stucco walls and taut exterior, emphasized by porthole openings at the top of the stout bell tower, it strongly evokes Southern California, especially on bright sunny days when bay breezes rustle through the palm trees along the curb line of the church's corner site. Sullivan was not usually so abstract when evoking historical models. Yet abstraction impresses the church building with a power that makes this one of his most admirable works.
