Amenthal

This two-story house with double gallery and heavy rusticated lintels was built of stone quarried near the site. Similar material was used for the stone wall that faces the river. The site was originally part of the town of Pittsburg, later annexed by Blanco. In 1887, John Wilson Baines and his wife, Ruth Ament Huffman, grandparents of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, purchased the house and named it Amenthal. The couple lived here until 1904. Andrew J. Wagner, an early-twentieth-century county sheriff, owned the house in 1918 and it remained in his family until 1948.
