The two-story hotel of locally made rose brick has a full-length front gallery and a hipped roof. The granite of the rusticated window sills and architraves was quarried locally. Successful from the start as a stagecoach stop and drummers (traveling salesmen) hotel and favored hangout for Governor James S. Hogg, the Roper later was an elegant small hotel known as Francis House until 1963.
